Coparenting Strategies for Post-Divorce HarmonyAre you dealing with a recent separation or divorce and attempting to co parent in the best possible way to help provide the most ideal situation for your children? Emotions can be raw after a divorce, especially when kids are involved so it’s vital that you work out a co parenting plan that is fair and equitable to you, your former partner and most importantly your children. At AMS Mediation we work with our clients to develop co parenting agreements that are fair and prioritize your family’s well-being.

Common Challenges in Co parenting

Making decisions can be difficult – You likely had issues agreeing on key decisions in your marriage which can also translate into co parenting decisions after a divorce. Just because your marriage didn’t work out doesn’t mean you can’t make decisions that are in the best interest of your children. Remember, every child deserves to have a meaningful relationship with both of their parents if possible.
One parent attacks the other in front of the children – It is never a good idea to attack another parent’s character for any reason, especially in front of children. Try to remember that this person you’re attacking is the father or mother of your children and deserves to be respected even during disagreements.
One parent speaks poorly about the other in front of others – Again, each individual should be respectful, if at all possible, when discussing their previous relationship and partner. Divorces can be contentious but nothing is gained by spreading negative comments to other individuals.

How Mediation Can Improve Co parenting

Reduce conflict – One of the most common benefits our clients see with mediation is the ability to defuse conflict and stress between two parents. With mediation a third-party mediator helps to facilitate a civil conversation around key issues such as custody to help create an agreeable solution.
Save time and money – Mediation costs much less than a traditional litigated divorce. Mediation sessions can also be done at the convenience of the parents to help everyone move on with their lives more quickly.
Focuses on the child’s best interest – No matter how heated various exchanges get it’s important to realize that the goal of mediation is to develop a coparenting agreement that is in the best interest of the child. A third-party mediator can help ensure this goal is met as efficiently as possible.
