What Should I Do To Get Ready For DivorcePreparing yourself emotionally for divorce is difficult enough, but there are also important logistical issues that must be managed as well. There are ways to prepare to file for divorce to make the process less stressful and more straightforward. Here are some tips to help you get ready for the divorce process:

Gather and organize important documents: The key issues to resolve when you settle the terms of your divorce is dividing your joint property and creating a parenting plan that outlines how your children will spend their time. In order to make these determinations, a mediator, attorney and/or a judge will need copies of your financial documents. This includes pay stubs, bank statements, retirement information and any other relevant documents.
Define your goals: Think hard about what is important to you. You will have a chance to communicate this to your ex, the court or in a mediation session. Consider drafting this in writing so that you can keep it in the front of your mind during negotiations.
Take a close look at your finances: If possible, it is important to have a financial reserve when you head into the divorce process. Many recommend that you try to have approximately three months of financial resources as well as available credit to offset the costs associated with divorce.
Focus on your kids: Everyone involved in your divorce is impacted, including your children. Make sure that you have time and energy to devote to your kids so that they get the support that they need during this time of intense change for them.
Consider the options for settling the terms of your divorce: You may assume that the only option for settling the terms of your divorce is going through the courts. However, more and more often, couples are using mediation to resolve the terms of their divorce. Mediation saves time and costs less and allows a family to be able to move forward in a healthier way.
