Co-Parenting in 2021 During PandemicOne of the most difficult issues that divorced parents face during the pandemic is how best (and safely) to manage parenting time. Co-parenting is challenging even without the stress of virtual school, working from home, and potential exposures to COVID-19. Taking the time to sit down with the help of a mediator or co-parenting coach to help map out a plan that will work for you. AMS Mediation can help you with this process so that you can put your kids first and reduce your overall stress level.

Tips for Co-Parenting During The Pandemic

Each family has to juggle different factors when it comes to COVID-19. Coming up with a plan that prioritizes safety depends on the professions of each parent, any underlying health conditions of members of the family, whether your kids are attending school in person or virtually, childcare and your shared perspective on how to handle quarantine, masking, and social distancing with others outside of your family unit.

The team at AMS Mediation recommends that you keep the following in mind as you navigate this difficult situation:
1. It will not last forever: It has been a long year for everyone, but the COVID-19 restrictions will not last forever. Try to keep that in mind and remember that this is hard for both you, your ex and your children.
2. Communicate openly and honestly: Be honest if you or someone you have been in contact with has been exposed. Do not hide high-risk behaviors. Staying open and honest will go a long way toward ensuring trust between you and your ex.
3. Be flexible: This time is hard for everyone. Try to be flexible with your ex, especially if the requests to see your children are reasonable.
4. Your custody arrangement does not change unless you consent or file an amendment with the court: Even if you and your ex decide to make some changes to your parenting plan during COVID-19, your actual custody agreement does not change unless you file an amendment with the courts.
5. Follow your local requirements for social distancing and masking: Keep everyone safe and reassure your co-parent that you are taking the pandemic seriously by wearing a mask and following social distancing guidelines.
6. Use technology for virtual visits: When you or your ex are not able to see your kids, schedule virtual visits so that they can stay connected with both parents.
7. Use the court system as a last resort: Mediation is a great way to resolve parenting issues during COVID-19. The court system should only be used in an extreme case.
